Product Overview
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is the perfect solution for backing and controlling the thickness of elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants. This round, flexible, closed-cell polyethylene foam with an exterior "skin" is available in various diameters to suit joints from 3/16" to 1-5/8" (5 to 41 mm). Its main function is to limit the sealant depth, preventing excessive use and ensuring proper joint design. Additionally, the sealant will not bond to the "skin" of the rod, allowing it to stretch and recover with joint movement, minimizing stress on the points of adhesion to the substrate.
The CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is engineered not to absorb or wick water to joint walls, making it compatible with cold-applied sealants and promoting the preferred hourglass shape for joint sealants due to its round shape. It can effortlessly withstand hot and cold temperature extremes from -45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C).
The Backer Rod is chemically inert, resistant to oils, gasoline, and solvents, and will not stain or "bleed" into sealant material. It is typically used in expansion/control joints for a variety of applications, including curtain walls, construction partitions, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frame perimeters, coping, floor and deck joints, and building rehabilitation projects.
Proper size selection of CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is crucial, as it controls the sealant bead depth. It should be approximately 25% wider than the joint to fit tightly and function as a bond breaker to prevent bottom side adhesion of the sealant. Always install using a blunt tool or roller. Our Cat. No. SBRR Backer Rod Roller is specifically designed for the smooth installation of all types of backer rods.
Product Warning:
